SAMHSA is retiring the SPARS Extensible Markup Language (XML) batch upload feature on September 30, 2024 as a result of the availability of the Comma-separated Values (CSV) batch upload feature in SPARS for all Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Training and Technical Assistance (TTA), and Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) grantees.

Most CSAT and TTA grantees have already transitioned to the CSV batch upload feature. Grantees still using the XML batch upload should begin transitioning to CSV batch upload now. The following trainings and resources for the CSV batch upload feature are available on SPARS:

To facilitate the transition, users should work on the following tasks:

  • Updating internal systems and procedures to align with the current CSV batch upload process.
  • Generating CSV upload files with SPARS templates and resources.
  • Testing upload files through front-end SPARS CSV batch upload screens.

The SPARS Team is also developing a future enhancement to CSV batch upload that will allow users to automate the submission of CSV files to SPARS. This will enable system-to-system exchange of CSV batch upload and error files in addition to the existing ability to submit files via the SPARS online website. The enhancement is expected to be available and announced to users of its availability by August 2024.

If you have questions or experience any issues with the transition to CSV batch upload, contact the SPARS Help Desk via email, SPARSHelpDesk@mathematica-mpr.com, or phone, 800-685-7623, from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM ET. Grantees can also submit a Technical Support Request for more hands-on assistance here.
